We finally found out if this little babe is a boy or a girl at my 20-week ultrasound. I went back and forth for weeks trying to decide if I wanted to do a gender reveal at all.
When I was pregnant with Rowan, we handed the envelope to my mom, and she took care of everything. This time around, we live about four hours away from family, so I had two choices. Either plan something myself or skip the reveal completely.
In the end, I knew I didn’t want to find out right there in the doctor’s office. I wanted it to feel a little more special. So I asked a close friend to help keep it a surprise.
And long story short…
It’s a girl.
I was honestly surprised. I really thought I was meant to be a boy mom. But around 10 weeks, I had this quiet feeling that this baby was a little rebel and very much a girl. We are so excited, and I cannot wait to start shopping.

How We Found Out
I really wanted Rowan to be involved, even if he didn’t fully understand what was happening. I considered confetti cannons and balloons, but those required more planning and waiting. I wanted to be surprised, but I also didn’t want to wait too long after the ultrasound to find out.
That is when I landed on the easiest idea. Water guns.
No big setup. No stress. Just something fun we could do right away in our backyard.

Water Guns and Colored Water
Making colored water for a gender reveal is quick and easy, and perfect if you want something low effort.
What You Will Need
- Water guns
Choose water guns that are not see-through so you cannot see the color inside. - Paint or food dye
We used washable finger paint because we already had it at home. Food dye works just as well. - Water
- Measuring cups and a funnel
These help keep things mess free.
How to Make the Colored Water
- Decide on the color you need for your reveal.
- If you want to be surprised too, give your sealed ultrasound results and supplies to a trusted friend.
- Fill a measuring cup with water.
- Add a few drops of washable paint or food dye and mix well.
- Adjust the color if needed. A small amount goes a long way.
- Carefully pour the colored water into the water guns.
- Secure the caps tightly.
- Test spray in a safe area before the reveal.
The Reveal
We set everything up in the backyard. Brady and Rowan were armed with water guns, and I wore a white t-shirt, leggings, an old denim shirt, and rain boots.

I will say this is not the most winter-friendly gender reveal idea. I was cold the second the water hit my belly.
But it was completely worth it.
Simple, fun, and a moment we will always remember.
