A thoughtful gift basket for baby showers or those first weeks at home
A few weeks ago, my cousin welcomed her baby, and as her due date got closer, I kept thinking about what new moms actually need in those early newborn weeks. Not baby gear, her. That’s how the idea for a New Mama Kit came together, and I mailed it off to Portland, Oregon, as a little reminder that she mattered too.
When I was a first-time mom, I spent so much time preparing for Rowan’s arrival that I barely thought about myself. He arrived three weeks early, and I didn’t even own a nursing bra yet, oops. That experience stuck with me, and it’s why I love gifting something that focuses on comfort, convenience, and a little self-care for new moms.

Why a New Mama Kit Is the Perfect Gift
Chances are, the new mom already has plenty of baby clothes, blankets, and toys. A New Mama Kit is a way to say, I see you. It’s practical, comforting, and feels personal, especially during those exhausting early weeks.
When you’re putting one together, keep these things in mind:
- What does the new mom actually like?
- Does the gift need to be mailed?
- Can everything be used easily and quickly?
My cousin loves beauty and skincare, so I focused on easy, low-effort self-care items she could use whenever she had a spare moment.
And remember, there are no rules. Have fun with it.
Step 1: Choose a Basket or Container
Because I had to ship this kit, I went with a small, lightweight basket from Target. If you’re giving this gift in person, you can choose something sturdier or more decorative that fits the mom’s home style.
Wire baskets are always a great option, too. They’re practical, trendy, and can be reused anywhere in the house long after the newborn phase.
Step 2: Fill It With Thoughtful Essentials
Here’s what I included in this New Mama Kit and why each item works so well.
Medicated wipes
This is one of those postpartum necessities no one tells you about. I had no idea I’d need them, and I definitely appreciated having them on hand. These are easy to find at Target or online.
Lotion and lip balm
Dry skin is real after having a baby. I chose travel-sized lotion and lip balm because they’re compact, cute, and perfect for tossing into a diaper bag or makeup pouch.
Facial sheet masks
Postpartum skin can be rough, and sheet masks are ideal because they’re quick and mess-free. Even five minutes feels like a spa moment when you’re a new mom.
Under-eye masks
Sleep deprivation shows up fast. Eye masks are a small but thoughtful way to help a new mom feel refreshed, even if she’s running on very little sleep.
Dry shampoo
This is a non-negotiable. Dry shampoo was one of my biggest postpartum lifesavers and still is. Hair washing doesn’t always happen on schedule.
Cleansing wipes
There were many nights I crawled into bed without washing my face. Makeup and cleansing wipes make skincare doable when energy is low.
Light body spray
Let’s be honest, postpartum life comes with some not-so-great smells. A light body spray can be a confidence boost on busy days.
A fun snack
I finished the kit with gourmet gummies. Snacks are always appreciated, and something fun or indulgent feels extra special.
A Small Gift That Means a Lot
A New Mama Kit doesn’t have to be expensive or complicated to be meaningful. A handful of thoughtful items can go a long way in making a new mom feel cared for during a season that’s often focused entirely on the baby.
If you were making a New Mama Kit, what would you include? I’d love to hear your ideas.

This is great. I’m always thinking about what to get for a mommy to be, but I never know what to get so I just stick to baby. I’m definitely references this for the next baby shower I attend.

I love this idea! I have two friends who are expecting in the next couple months – I will definitely be using this suggestion 🙂 thanks again!
I love this idea! Everyone is all about the babies, but they forget that the Mamas did all the hard work and need some loving too!
This is such a cute idea! Everyone is always getting SO many things for the baby, that the mama doesn’t get as much love as she should. Definitely keeping this in mind once my friend has her baby!
This is such a great idea. When we are becoming moms, the gifts we get are all for baby. The moms want a little gift too!
This is such a sweet idea! And I loved Tucks pads after having my babies, they were such a nice relief.
I love it! I’m a mama-to-be (in December) and would love to get something like this!
love this! So many times I see gift baskets like this but they always have stuff in it that I wanna roll my eyes at. But everything in this basket are actually good choices that I’d want!

This is such a great idea. I hope to do something like this for the next friend of mine that has a baby, because a new mom still deserves some extra pampering, especially after childbirth!
This is the perfect basket of goodies for any new mom!!! Love the gummies!
Um this would be SO fun to receive!
I think any new mama would love this! Great ideas.
This is such a great idea. i have done something similar for my friends when they were expecting. I put a gift bag together of all the things that I WISH we were told about before having children! All the little things that you wouldn’t think to get beforehand.
I would add in a bunch of snacks that are healthy and easy to grab and eat. Plus coffee gift cards. I would have loved a ballet like this, would have been a blessing as a new mom.
Yes!! If I was giving it to my cousin in person I would have put in a bunch a snacks too! But since I had to ship it, I had to be super selective!!
This is so cute and thoughtful!!
Mommy needs some TLC after baby. I love this list of ideas!!
Great ideas and a great gift for a baby shower! So cute
Such a great idea! She’s going to love this! Those gummies are my favorite 🙂
What a sweet gesture and gift to spoil a new mama! Love everything you included! I would also add a good dry shampoo because my greasy hair needed it for days when I didn’t have time to wash it!
Oh I did! I gave her my favorite one: Not Your Mother’s Clean Freak! It was pictured with the body spray and the cleansing wipes!!
Fantastic idea! I am sure every new Mum would appreciate fellow Mums sharing their tips and tricks to survive the new Mum period. My good friend recently had a baby, I found a great range of quirky gifts which had bath products in the scent of her favourite tipple (gin and tonic). At least if she can’t drink it she can bath in it!! https://www.cuckooland.com/gifts
This is such a great idea! I also love the gift of food. I appreciate so many practical and fun things you added to your basket!
