Rowan’s second birthday landed on a Saturday, so we kept things low-key with a backyard party. At two years old, I truly did not feel the need to go all out. Toddlers are happy with snacks, a few toys, and space to run around. That was the energy I leaned into.
If you are looking for an easy, no stress race car–themed toddler birthday party, this is exactly what we did.

Why We Skipped a Character Theme
I’m not big on character-themed birthday parties, mostly for budget reasons. While Rowan was very into the movie Cars at the time, a full character party just did not feel necessary. That said, if character parties are your thing, go for it. I have a feeling that next year I will not have much choice once he can fully tell me what he wants.
Instead, I went with a simple race car theme that felt classic and easy to pull together.
Supplies We Used
Here is a quick breakdown of what we needed for the party:
- Birthday invites
- Lunch treat boxes
- Wooden cars for decorating
- Washable markers
The Birthday Invite
I usually design our birthday invitations and Christmas cards myself, but I procrastinated this year and turned to Etsy. I found a simple vintage style race car invite that was easy to personalize and print at home. Sometimes outsourcing is the best decision.
The Food
For food, I kept things very simple.
For the adults, we did Costco croissant sandwiches, a quinoa salad, a veggie tray, and a giant box of chips.
For the kids, I made individual lunch boxes, which turned out to be one of my favorite parts of the party.
Each box included:
- A homemade peanut butter and jelly sandwich
- An applesauce pouch
- Annie’s Cheddar Bunnies

I made the peanut butter and jelly sandwiches instead of buying Uncrustables. They are surprisingly easy to make, and I will share how to do it soon.
The goal was easy food for toddlers and zero stress for parents. The white gable boxes were from Amazon, and while I originally planned to add labels, this party came together about five days before the event. Sometimes you let things go.
The Dessert Table
What is a birthday party without dessert?
I styled a small dessert table using items I already had at home, including serving bowls, a cake stand, a letter board, and a slate board.

Rowan’s birthday cake was as simple as it gets. I used Funfetti cake mix and store-bought frosting. To make it fit the race car theme, I added a black sugar sheet to look like a road and placed two washed Matchbox cars on top. Crushed Oreos around the sides made it feel a little more fun and playful.

I also put out Oreos and made car-shaped gummies using a silicone mold.

Decorate Your Own Race Car Activity
I always like to have some sort of activity for kids at parties, especially toddler parties.
Brady built a simple wooden race track, and I bought unfinished wooden cars for the kids to decorate. We set out washable markers and let them color their cars before racing them down the track.
It was simple, inexpensive, and kept the kids busy without much effort.

Final Thoughts
And that was it. A short, sweet, and simple race car–themed birthday party for our two year old. Nothing fancy, no over planning, and everyone had a great time. Sometimes simple really is the best way to go, especially with toddlers.
