Beach days sound easy… until you’re packing for kids.
After growing up in Orange County and now taking my own kids to the beach, I’ve figured out what we actually need to make the day go smoothly. This is our go-to beach setup. Nothing fancy, just the things that make it easier to relax while the kids play.
If you’re planning a beach day with kids, here’s exactly what I bring every time.

Our Beach Day Essentials with Kids
A Wagon You Can Pull Through The Sand
This is non-negotiable for us. It makes getting everything from the car to the sand so much easier, especially when you’re carrying towels, toys, and snacks. If you go to the beach often, this is 100% worth it.
More Towels Than You Think You Need
I always pack extra towels. Between wet swimsuits, spills, and sand, we end up using all of them. It’s one of those things you never regret bringing more of.
Beach Blanket
A beach blanket gives us a clean place to sit and helps keep everything a little more organized. It also makes a big difference when you’re trying to keep snacks out of the sand.
Beach Chairs
Sitting directly in the sand all day is not it. Having a couple of beach chairs makes it so much more comfortable, especially if you’re there for a few hours.
Ninja Backpack Cooler
This has been a game changer. It’s easy to carry and keeps everything cold without needing a big, bulky cooler. I can throw it on my back and still help with everything else.
Big Beach Umbrella
Shade is key, especially with kids. A good umbrella gives everyone a place to cool down and take a break from the sun.
Rinse Bucket for Sandy Feet
We bring a simple bucket and fill it with water so the kids can rinse off their feet throughout the day. It helps keep our setup a little less sandy. We got ours from Costco.
Portable Beach Shower (Game Changer)
This is something we keep in the car and it has made a huge difference. We keep it in a tub of water so the water stays warm, and use it to rinse off the kids, sand toys, and boogie boards before heading home.
It helps get most of the sand off before they even get in the car, which makes cleanup so much easier. If you go to the beach often with kids, this is one of those things that’s totally worth it.
Sand Toys
A must. This is what keeps them entertained the longest. I try to keep it simple, but we always bring a few favorites.
Boogie Boards
These are perfect for getting the kids in the water and keeping them busy. They end up using these every single time we go.
What I Don’t Bring Anymore
Over time, I’ve learned that bringing less actually makes beach days easier.
Here are a few things I’ve stopped packing:
- Too many snacks (we keep it simple now)
- Bulky coolers that are hard to carry
- Anything that doesn’t have a clear purpose
Final Thoughts
This setup has made our beach days so much easier and more enjoyable. It’s not about bringing everything, it’s about bringing the right things.
If you have any beach must-haves, I would love to hear them. I’m always looking for ways to simplify and make it even easier.
